A More Intimate Connection

We've often been asked, on the feedback forum and elsewhere, to make more of the various Connected qualities in Echo Bazaar. We're taking a step in that direction today with connection items.

If you have a look at the Curiosity section of the Bazaar, you'll see that there's a gaggle of new trinkets there. These are all usable items, and can be used to increase Connected qualities. But more than just a mechanical contrivance, these things are badges of affiliation.

Right now, the only use for these things is to increase the Connected qualities. But we're planning on adding some content for them, whether based directly on having the items, or having high Connected qualities that the items can help with.

The prices of the items reflect how difficult it is to increase the Connected quality otherwise. The rarer ones are more expensive, and the rarest Connected qualities don't have an item at all. The Masters of the Bazaar, among others, aren't swayed by such baubles. There is an item for the university, and it's up to you to decide whether Benthic or Summerset gets your patronage. If you've suffered a certain setback in your academic career, the item won't help you directly. But the time might come when you need a solid reputation with one of the colleges to reclaim your academic credentials.

"the time might come when you need a solid reputation with one of the colleges to reclaim your academic credentials."

As an honest scholar, this news delights me much. G-d bless, delightful friends.

Well I am now in possession of a reliquary, I hope that the Bishop of Southwark no longer wishes to do something very secular to me now.

I shall have this amber set in a little medallion.  It does pulsate so disturbingly sweetly.  Indeed, the jeweller almost threw me out onto the street.

I'm quite sure that urchins would run away with such baubles.

An interesting development, but I'm trying to imagine the consequences of communicating in Chinese using a book that purports to teach you all Oriental languages -- or simply being seen to own such a tome -- and even my schadenfreude fails me.

You mean the book that 'claims' to 'give a grounding' in 'many' of the languages? where it says 'a tall order for one little book'? I think you're missing the gag.

No, I get that it's a gag, but it's surely meant to give a substantial increase in Connected: The Orient. Unless someone's bought it and used it and discovered that it decreases your Connected: the Orient because dudes are laughing at you in languages you didn't realize you didn't speak, I am not sure I understand its utility to that purpose!

Depends, has anyone read it? Perhaps it gives instruction in intonation? Or maybe it is simply a grab-bag of different parts of the language? I am more worried about my suspicion suffering at a tavern where "everyone knows my name"!

Anyway, I was just wondering, when about will these items begin to make a serious difference? Will we see all of the "slot" items appearing like these, a few weeks before the overall update is rolled out?

Emma the police like me more every time I polish my Antique Constables badge. I think this game might not be entirely realistic ;)

PS loving the Diary of the Dead. Does Romero know??

I bought an "Endowment of a University Fellowship" and "Entry in Slowcake's Exceptionals" to attempt to boost my University and Society reputations.  When I use either of them, it tells me that my Connected quality is already too high for the storylet, although it's happy to consume my 50p worth of materials.  I think it should be made more clear what level reputations the items are usable for before purchase, I'm out nearly 200e on items with no use to me.

@ Nick: I think these items are going to be more useful later on. You may have spent a large amount of cash on them, but it's likely that they will come into their own with the new inventory slots.

Plus the uni one will be useful for when we both wish to return to the ivied halls of learning, it says so in the blog post afterall.

@Nick: as Robert guesses, we do plan to do more with these items (though it isn't related to the new inventory slots), so you should still find a use for them. But you're right - we've added a tag to make it clear.

As a minor thing Mr Alexis' but will the inventory overhaul be tied to another update? Or will it be a major change all by itself?

Is it deliberate that the Duchess has no trinket?

[Sigh] They look shiny - pity nearly all of my Connected are too high to benefit. A good idea though.
A question that may concern other people: can we buy *two* of "Endowment of a University Fellowship" and use one for Benthic and the other for Somerset?

@Merus This is indeed deliberate.

@James Walker One endowment can stretch both ways, if one is a diplomatically inclined academic.

Hm... I just got a Red-Feathered Pin, since I wanted a way to increase my connections in the Empress' Court, but I was disappointed to see that my connected quality was too low to even use the item! That's a rather narrow usage -- if your connections are at 10, then you probably already have a good source of connections, and there isn't that big of a gap between 10 and 20, which is where it maxes out anyway. I think it would be a good idea to remove the prerequisite in order to use it, or lower the threshold at the very least.

(By the way, are the items consumable, or can you use them as much as you want? That might justify a threshold for using them, but it's still kind of bothersome if you've trapped yourself in a corner like if you're at the Court.)

@Little The
The items are not consumed when used. And remember that Connection qualities are often spent, so these items can be used to rebuild the quality after calling in favours.

Many connections can be built to 10 at the carnival. We wanted both methods to have a place.

Of course, there are no limitations on building the connection qualities using the items and Fate.
